Stolen Air

Inspired by a trip to Japan with my friends, this song is about freedom, friendship, and the nostalgia of knowing a moment will eventually become a memory. I wrote, arranged, recorded, and produced the track in Logic Pro.

Endless Yesterday

This song reflects the loneliness and homesickness I felt while studying in the United States, away from home. Influenced by Laufey’s music, I began exploring bossa nova songwriting. I wrote the lyrics, melody, and arrangement, performed the vocals, arranged the cello, percussion, and other instrumental parts, and produced the track in Logic Pro.

Eastern Forest

Eastern Forest is a game-scoring project inspired by environments and music with East Asian cultural influences. I composed four original pieces for four distinct areas of a stylized 3D world, then implemented the score in Unity using the Wwise audio middleware.

Each cue loops seamlessly while the player remains in its region. Crossing into a new area triggers a Wwise state change, with musical transitions aligned to bar lines and joined by cymbal swells for a smoother sense of movement.

Bamboo Forest

Harp arpeggios create a crisp, bell-like shimmer over piano and xun. Dizi, flute, erhu, and xiao gradually deepen the forest from warmth into a more solitary tone.

02

Plain Area

A flute solo and soft piano chords establish an open, melancholic space. Strings, pipa, and xiao pass the melody between them as the cue grows darker and more reflective.

Bridge Area

Bright pipa arpeggios and yangqin support a long flute melody. Cello and violin widen the sound, moving the region from mystery toward a more expansive folk-inspired atmosphere.

Tree Area

Piano carries a peaceful main theme while flute, violin, strings, and oboe form a soft counter-melody. The arrangement resolves with a calm, dreamlike return to the piano.

Concept

Sound in continuous transformation

In Buddhism, impermanence (無常) describes the idea that nothing remains fixed. Life, birth and death, emotions, relationships, nature, and everything we experience are constantly changing, fading, and becoming something new.

Rather than treating change only as an ending or a loss, impermanence understands existence as a continuous process of transformation. This project asks how sound itself can embody that philosophy by creating a musical environment in which no sonic element remains completely fixed.

Process & Sound World

I chose VCV Rack and modular synthesis because modular systems naturally generate and transform sound. Instead of relying entirely on fixed melodies, rhythms, or structures, the piece builds a system in which sounds interact and continuously evolve. Small shifts in modulation, pitch, rhythm, and timbre gradually lead the music somewhere unexpected.

Traditional Chinese instruments—including erhu, dizi, and guqin—connect the electronic sound world to the Buddhist concept at the center of the work.

Three Stages

01

Formation

A deep, low sound evokes the atmosphere of a Buddhist temple. A temple bell gradually enters the soundscape, creating a quiet, spiritual beginning and representing the emergence of existence.

02

Transformation

The music becomes increasingly chaotic. Notes and drum patterns appear unpredictably while shifting rhythms, pitches, and timbres overlap without settling into a fixed pattern. This instability represents the uncertainty and constant change of the world.

03

Dissolution

Chaos gives way to space and inner peace. Birds, a wooden fish, and a temple bell create stillness and reflection. The piece gradually settles, suggesting that calm can exist even while everything continues to change.
